NWA 16739 Location Unknown
Morocco
Purchased: 2017
Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)
History: The meteorite was purchased from Mr. Aziz Habibi (Agadir, Morocco) in 2017. Physical characteristics: A single stone of 1095 g in total weight has flattened shape and preserved fusion crust. One side of the sample is broken. The surface with poorly developed regmaglypts is dark brown to black in color. Chondritic texture is visible on the broken part of the sample. Petrography: The meteorite has chondritic texture and is composed of chondrules (69.5 vol.%) and fine-grained silicate matrix (27.5 vol.%). The well-defined chondrules are of the ROP, GP, GOP, GO, BO, BOP, PO, POP and minor CC types. Average chondrule diameter is 740±490 µm (N=120). Chondrule mesostasis is an isotropic glass. Olivine has weak wavy extinction and irregular fractures. The silicate matrix is very fine-grained and not transparent. Metal (0.7 vol.%) and troilite (5 vol.%) form irregular aggregates mostly distributed between the chondrules and often form the chondrule rims. Iron hydroxide is accessory phase. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: (S. E. Borisovsky, EPMA, IGEM) Olivine Fa18.8±10.5, PMD Fa=56%; in wt%: CaO=0.18±0.09; MnO=0.34±0.17; Cr2O3=0.22±0.12 (n=25); Pyroxene Fs16.9±12.4 Wo1.6±1.1; Al2O3=0.58±0.54; MnO=0.44±0.33; Cr2O3=0.81±0.31 (n=22). Classification: Based on texture, metal abundance and the silicates composition the meteorite is classified as ordinary chondrite of chemical group LL, petrological type 3, weakly shocked (S2) and weakly weathered (W1).
